It houses now the largest collection of Florentine Renaissance painters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael; but also “non-Florentine” artists, such as Titian and Caravaggio.

The “Gallery of the Academy” was founded together with the nearby “Academy of Fine Arts” by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Peter Leopold of Lorraine in 1784. It is now famous for being the “house” of David, Michelangelo’s masterpiece, whose original location was in front of Palazzo Vecchio (“Old Palace”), where now stands its copy. The museum, however, is not only David, but much more, starting with other important artworks still by Michelangelo!
OPTIONS: We offer tours in Florence from min. 1h30min to 3 hours according to your needs.
It is a walking tour that will take us through the streets and squares of the historic center of Florence to discover its monuments, its major buildings and churches, revealing us their history: how and when they were born, who are the big and small characters behind their creation, from the patronage of the powerful Medici family, and the important artists who worked for them, to the events of the 19th century, when Florence became for a short time capital of Italy! We will retrace the adventurous and fascinating life of this city, that started a long time ago, precisely in 59 BC.
This Medieval palace, built at the end of the 13 th Century by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio, becoming from that moment the seat of all the governments of Florence over the centuries, is today a beautiful museum.
Here we will follow important steps of the history of Florence, that gained the Palazzo four different names: Palazzo dei Priori (“Palace of the Priors”), Palazzo della Signoria (“Palace of the Lords”), Palazzo Ducale (“Ducal Palace”) and finally Palazzo Vecchio (“Old Palace”). From Arnolfo di Cambio to Giorgio Vasari, who worked here in the 16 th century to turn the palace into the new residence of Cosimo I Medici, we will see the work of many artists that enlarged the Medieval castle in a temple of the Florentine Mannerism.
The visit can also include the climb to the “round walkway” and to Arnolfo’s Tower, that offer a beautiful view of the city.
It is the national museum of sculpture and minor arts. In its typically medieval setting, due to its story begun in 1255, we can admire an important nucleus of statues by Donatello, as well as by Michelangelo, Della Robbia, Giambologna, Benvenuto Cellini, Ammannati.. There are also several collections of minor arts with precious and curious objects of various origins, such as mirrors, ivory artifacts, jewellery, Limoges enamels and much more!

The last and largest residence of the Medici, the “Pitti Palace”, built by the Pitti family (rivals of the powerful Medici) in the 15 th century, was later inhabited by the Lorraine and Savoy dynasties, and for a short time even by Napoleon’s sister Elisa Baciocchi. The site is now seat of several museums, the most important being the “Palatine Gallery”, a magnificent collection of paintings “put together” by the four ruling families. Given the richness and vastness of this collection, we advise that you visit the Gallery with a guide that can help you along the way. Another important destination not to be missed in the Pitti Palace is its garden, one of the most beautiful of the city: the “Boboli Garden”.

An example of Renaissance and Baroque styles is certainly the palace that Cosimo the Elder Medici, “Pater Patriae” (“Father pf the Fatherland”) and initiator of the Medici and Florentine fortune, commissioned to the architect Michelozzo in 1444.
Its architecture is pure and simple, typical of the Florentine Renaissance.
Later, in the 17th century, Giovan Battista Foggini will enlarge it for the new owners, the Riccardi family. Its interior reflects the passage of time and families: the museum itinerary includes Renaissance artworks, starting with the “Chapel of the Magi” by Benozzo Gozzoli, as well as artworks that show the Baroque taste of the Riccardi family, such as the frescoes by Luca Giordano.

Did you know that in Florence is preserved the second most important collection of Egyptian finds in Italy after the one in Turin? It is not the only surprise of the Archaeological Museum of Florence, housed in the 17th century Palazzo della Crocetta: the collections, that we owe to the Medici and Lorraine famillies, are divided into Etruscan and Greek, besides the Egyptian Museum. An important example? The famous Chimera of Arezzo, found at the time of Cosimo I Medici, who wanted it in Palazzo Vecchio!
It is certainly a museum for those who love antiquity, but also appreciated by children!

Hidden in the Oltrarno part of the city, just beyond the Ponte alle Grazie ("Bridge of the Graces"), the Bardini Museum is not usually included in the classic tours of Florence, but is no less valuable. The building, a former church and monastery of the 13th century, was purchased and adapted at the end of the 19th century by the collector and antique dealer Stefano Bardini, who made it the showroom of his activity. His private collection of art, displayed in these rooms designed and arranged by Bardini himself to promote the purchase, finally passed to the City of Florence, which made it a museum. It includes important artworks by Tino di Camaino, Donatello, Pollaiolo, Guercino and others. But it is the monumentality of the installation itself that will fascinate you, bringing you into the world of the great antique dealers of the last century.

Known as the "Pantheon of the Illustrious Italians", this Franciscan church is, in fact, the burial place of Galileo, Machiavelli, Michelangelo and many others. But its origin, as for Santa Maria Novella Church, dates back to the end of the 13th century, when the Franciscans, who settled in the city, asked Arnolfo di Cambio to rebuild their original church. Since then, many artists worked here: you will admire the most important Medieval fresco cycles of the city, made by Giotto and his followers in the 14th century, as well as Renaissance masterpieces, from the sculptures by Donatello to the Pazzi Chapel by Filippo Brunelleschi. As for the Cathedral of Florence, the façade of Santa Croce dates also back to the 19th century.

Inside it preserves all its Romanesque athmosphere, from the architectural structures, to the sculptures and the frescoes, also offering important Renaissance additions. Outside, a beautiful and important monumental cemetery designed in the 1800s.

The visit to the church is free, while the monastery is now the Museum of San Marco. Entering this complex means leaving behind the chaos of the city, to absorb the peace that this place emanates, from the entrance to the cloister. The result of the work of artists among the favorites of Cosimo the Elder, and which he himself called here in the fifteenth century to restore a previous structure, the place draws its sense of quietness and serenity also from the Renaissance lines of the architect Michelozzo, embellished by the delicacy of Fra Angelico's frescoes. Another figure linked to this place? Fra Girolamo Savonarola!

The 13th century church of the Dominican Order, in the 15 th century gained a fully Renaissance façade by one of the most important masters of that time in Florence: Leon Battista Alberti, who worked here for the rich Rucellai family.
But inside, the church preserves many other precious artworks! Some examples: three crucifixions bear three important names: Giotto, Masaccio and Filippo Brunelleschi! And then the frescoes by Ghirlandaio, helped by a young Michelangelo! And then the cloisters and the 14th century Cappella degli Spagnoli. In conclusion: this work of Florentine Gothic architecture is absolutely not to be missed!

Let's discover the Florence of the Middle Ages, that of the towers and of the tower-houses that have earned it the nickname of "Manhattan of the Middle Ages"; but also the Florence of the merchant guilds, here called "Arti", that of the Bargello, of the Romanesque and Gothic churches, of the tabernacles, of the city defensive walls with their gates, that of Dante, Giotto and Arnolfo di Cambio. That medieval Florence that, despite all the changes over the centuries, especially when in 1865 it became the capital of Italy, still exists in the corners of the city.

The statues in Florence have always been its most faithful inhabitants, and it is extraordinary to discover the passages that time and art have "sculpted" in their features: from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, from Mannerism to the Baroque, up to the 19th century.
